John 3:22-30
In today’s gospel we see Jesus, after receiving baptism began his ministry and started baptizing the people. Many were attracted to Jesus. Then the followers of John the Baptist approached John and complained about the one whom the one, John testified. That was Jesus. Jesus became a hero and all were going to him. To this John replays: “I am not Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him.”
The mission of Jesus was to save the world; to John it was to become a witness to the truth. Both of them had different mission in their life. However they prepared themselves in the same manner. Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness in fasting and praying. He was led by the spirit. About John it is written: “the child grew and became strong in spirit and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel” (Luke 1: 80)
Let me focus on two thoughts; the first, to be filled with the spirit. We all are anointed. The sacraments that of baptism, confirmation, daily Eucharistic celebration and the sacrament of reconciliation renew the spirit we received.
The second is to be prepared in the wilderness. It needs individual interest and conscious attempt. It is our duty. Every day we should have this wilderness experience. I think our personal reflection or meditation is like the wilderness experience of Jesus as well as John the Baptist. CMI constitution calls it as mental prayer. This mental prayer leads to the constant remembrance of our Lord, which guides to the experience of the Divine.
Let us always walk with our Lord, talk to our Lord as St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara had the abba consciousness, in his expression God’s will- always and everywhere. Today we celebrate 214th birthday of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara. Let us seek the intercession of St. Chavara. The Lord blesses us all.
