Mathew
Chapter 2:13-14, 19-23
Respected
Rev.Fr.Rector, Reverend Fathers and my dear brothers in Jesus Christ.
“He
arose and took the young child and His Mother by night, and departed into
Egypt.”(Mathew 2-14). In today’s gospel passage, we see the journey of Holy
Family to Egypt and their return from Egypt. St. Joseph takes a major role in
this journey. This episode reflects the humility and the obedience of St.
Joseph towards God and His words.
The Angel said to him “Arise and take the young child and his mother,
and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.” Let us imagine how much
struggle Joseph might have felt in his mind. He was middle class, respected
citizen, soon to be married. Now a few weeks later, he is fugitive from the
King and his soldiers. In between the wedding, the birth of the babe, the visit
of the angel, everything happens. Joseph might have felt as if he has stepped
into a carnival ride of crises. Even in the face of that critical moment of
life, he did not breakdown He is good lesson for us about how to depend on
God’s providence.
Joseph takes Mary and Jesus to Egypt, where they remain until Herod
dies. It is a journey of at least 150 miles (it means 240 km) lasts for weeks.
However Joseph obeys God immediately not even waiting for the daylight. He
begins his journey in the dead of the night. As religious, we St. Joseph is a
great inspiration for us. This gospel passage gives us a strong message to our
religious life that obedience is a great vow and strength for a religious.
We can learn from him the attitude of obedience, as well as his trust in
God’s words. Joseph models the unwavering obedience. As peculiar as his situation
has become, Joseph obeyed without any complaint. He utters not a single word
against God’s plan. Even though we know only little about him, his prompt
obedience is crucial to God’s plan. He knows nothing even the next step of the
journey, but he takes that step. So also our obedience is crucial to God’s
plan.
We may not see the fullness of God’s plan for our live and better than
Joseph could see it for his life. But we can be assured that our faithfulness will
be rewarded. Sometimes a seed that we plant in one place, will blossom. Unseen
by us, in any circumstances, God will not fail to bless our faithfulness.
God does greater things through human beings. God called us to be His
messengers through our obedient way of life.
Let us ask Jesus the grace to be
obedient to the will of God, through the intercession of St. Joseph.
God bless you all. Amen
